Vintage in New York

Somaya Oueslati has two loves: music and fashion. She’s built a successful career managing musicians including, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Tabi Bonni and UK R&B star, Omar. Now, Somaya is turning to her other love. She’s putting the c in chic, bringing vintage clothing to New York.

Though she is a native of Tunisia, in North Africa, Somaya grew up in Sweden before relocating to the United States, soaking up the best of all cultures. Recent trips home have caused the fashionista lying dormant in her subconscious to awaken. Fascinated with fashion since she was a child, Somaya has decided the time is right to open a boutique. Catering to the fashion conscious, and money minded shopper, SoSo (the first two letters of Somaya and her twin sister’s names) will be based in Brooklyn, New York.

The boutique, opening early-2010, will feature vintage clothing, accessories and shoes. There will also be authentic, locally crafted items from Tunisia, as well as natural bath and body products.

When you think of SoSo, think individuality—think unique, one of a kind items. Those uncomfortable moments, walking into a party and finding a mirror image of your outfit staring back at you, can be an unpleasant, but distant memory.

Somaya travels home often to personally select the pieces that catch her well trained eye. It’s a talent she learned watching her mother while growing up. “It’s in the stitching and the quality of the fabric,” Somaya says. The process isn’t an easy one, but it’s a task she doesn’t trust to anyone else. “My sister and I have totally different taste,” she laughs.

So what type of place will SoSo be? Picture a cozy, art filled boutique, nestled in the heart of Brooklyn. Music is playing in the background, candles fill the air with a hint of vanilla and comfortable seating is arranged just so. Next to that comfy seat, magazines and a glass of wine await that special man, brave enough to accompany you on that shopping trip.

This entrepreneur recognizes how her business benefits both her native and adoptive homes.  The Tunisian economy is supported with her purchases, while Americans receive the benefit of uniquely beautiful, quality clothing at prices that won’t give you sticker shock. As Somaya puts it, “I want to bring classy back to women.”
While waiting for the doors of SoSo to open, Somaya’s vintage clothing can be found at Key Boutique in Soho, NY.
